Discover How It's ALL Connected A main theme on this site is connection:  Connections between people from different cultures.Connections between big ideas and our daily lives. As this mandala illustrates, this is both a new idea and a very old one.  Look for the Discovery headings at the beginning of titles to understand the concepts, then move on to the measurable action tabs when you're ready to take steps, and enjoy others reflections on what these ideas have meant in their life when the title starts with Reflection.
Discover Tools to Reinvent Yourself! Reinventing yourself is the energy behind this website.  In whatever ways we work to improve our world, our communities or our lives, this website should have something of interest: a) Personal blogs from Alana, Margie and Friends, b) A doctoral participatory group, or c) Stories and news articles about the world we live in and the work that supports us.  Look for the Measurable Action Headings in the title as a clue that this article contains a tool for growth and improvement.
Discover Doctoral Mentoring Since 2007 Alana has worked as an independent academic, largely mentoring doctoral students.  As evidenced by the tools and discussion under the Doctoral Participatory Network on the far right tab on this site, she has refined many techniques that prove to aid students finishing in a timely fashion.  Anyone interested in contacting her regarding private consultation can reach her through: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Open to anyone working towards their doctorate, the social network allows you to start special interest groups through which you can share resources and support.
Discover Participatory Action Research Participatory action research is a three step process that helps groups solve complex problems.  Alana has written a couple of books and has research confirming its efficacy as used in professional development, education, and business.
Discover Training Options After a year of research many things have emerged about the future(s) of education.  Alana will start "taking this show on the road," facilitating groups in person or virtually, and discussing or presenting on the world of ideas that add up to new designs for education.  It is time that more people were discussing, "What do our young people need to thrive in the world they will inherit?  A world we cannot imagine." This is added to the work she does starting and facilitating groups who want to address complex issues using participatory action research.

Welcome to ReinventingLife.org

The webhome of E. Alana James Ed.D. and Tracesea Slater, M.S.

We teach BIG ideas, in practical steps to build solid practices and sustainable futures.

Participatory action research underpins much of what we do with its three step process of discovery, measurable action, and reflection.

We are currently writing our second book on that process for Sage Publishing: PAR for Business

We welcome inquiries into how the ideas on these pages might be useful in your world(s).

One of the important things to remember as we reinvent our lives is that we MUST stay grateful.  This powerful energy connects us to the abundance around us, keeps us humble, and helps smooth out the quirky paths caused by human downfalls such as greed.

This video is one of the most beautiful we have seen on this subject - please take 3 minutes and enjoy it.  Meanwhile let me offer words of gratitude for the friendship and connections of all who read and use the tools of this website.  It is your interest that propel us to keep finding great tools such as these.

As any who know me are aware, I have struggled with weight loss my whole life. Thus I have done a couple of rounds with Weight Watchers (and I respect the organization a great deal, I learned a lot). However the BIGGEST thing I learned from WW was something entirely different – How to improve my time management skills.

In WW you are asked to write down everything you eat – its amazing how consciousness helps. Seriously, just looking at what you are eating, knowing you will have to be accountable to yourself for it makes it much easier to “just say no.” More importantly it allows you to feel success over the little things....want to know more?  follow the Read More link below

It feels like it is time for a quick blog post to share what has been happening. The short answer is: “A lot!” It seems that the universe once again has me reinventing my life! It's amazing how, with the right background and foundation we can make life changing decisions so quickly and easily.

  1. In my pursuit of the dream that in 10 years my passive income will pay my bills I have begun to strategize on what types of things (other than royalties from my books) will creaate passive (or near passive) income?

  2. I started by making a forward thinking video of rolling affirmations and pictures.....(want to know more?  folllow the readmore link below)

Step 1: Discovery

There is stress and then there is tension, the trick is in being able to tell the difference. To our body they are very similar – all stress – the difference is in how we hold them in our minds. This article explores this premise.

I am a teacher, and a lifelong learner. In recent years, I have taken on several steep uphill learning curves, such as learning to live in a new country, learning advanced technology, etc. Consistently I noticed that great tension is felt just before a breakthrough in learning and understanding.

Hi Friends and Family!  A friend in Denver asked what was new with me this year and since I have a lot to say (unexpectedly this decade has started with a BANG) I thought I would make it all a blog post.  The rest is serious growth oriented stuff - so if you want to start with a lighter note - click on the video (have to follow the readmore link) - Little Lord Peter at 10 months is learning to play catch - with him throwing it back to me!

Tracesea and I are participating in Philosophers Notes 50 Day Challenge.  This means that we will read or listen to the synopsis of philosophical and practical self-help texts for the next 50 days.  The outcome of immersing ourselves in other people's ideas will be increased mindfulness as to the gaps between those ideas and the quality of our lives.  Some people might say that this is a set up for discouragement, but we believe it will be invigorating as it helps us redefine the direction of our lives and this work.

The first two philosophers were Don Miquel Ruiz and Stephen Covey.  Together they form a foundation for mindfulness.  The first through keeping agreements with ourselves, and the second building on those agreements with habits of outlook and action. Ruiz suggests we build the integrity of Self in our words, center on our own track refusing to take personally how others react, forgo making assumptions and playing hard and with commitment to whatever we do (he calls this one "doing our best").  The gap for me here was the idea that I did not have to kowtow or pay lots of attention to others reactions
